5 Quick Tips for Talking About Your Weaknesses in a Job Interview

Updated: Jun 21, 2022

"So, tell me about your weaknesses." For many of us, no matter how many times we've answered this question in previous job interviews, it always seems a bit daunting to talk about your weaknesses to a potential employer. Here are 5 quick tips for nailing the response.

  1. Highlight your weakness but share it in a positive way. For example, "I've always had strong risk identification and mitigation skills in a Waterfall environment, but haven't had much experience with this in the Agile approach. However, I am currently taking a course on Risk Management in an Agile organization because i've recognized that this may be a weak area for me.

  2. Be sincere in your response, but always approach interview questions with the intention to sell yourself. Focus on leading with the weakness and then pivot to how you have worked/ are working on improving that weak area.

  3. Don't respond with "I have no weaknesses." This makes candidates seem as though they lack self-awareness.

  4. Don't respond with "I'm a perfectionist." This is a very common and overused response. The goal is to show that you are open to recognizing your areas of opportunity and are humble enough to share them.

  5. Don't overshare or be too honest, especially if you have a true weakness that can hinder you from being considered further for the position that you are applying for.
